Recently, a TikTok video addressing these challenges went viral, amassing over 3.2 million views (and counting). The video shared tips on how to prevent your home from developing mould this autumn and winter.
With there being over 41,000 searches in the last month alone for ‘how to get rid of mould’, experts at online home store, Wayfair UK, have revealed their top tips to prevent mould growth in your home over the next few months.
Expert-approved And Reliable Tips To Prevent Mould
Here’s how to prevent mould growth in your home:
Keep An Eye Out For Condensation Build-up
Heating our homes during colder months can create conditions that encourage mould growth. Warmer air holds more moisture, and when it meets cold surfaces, condensation—tiny water droplets—forms. Be mindful of condensation on windows and sills, and wipe it away as soon as you notice it.
Maintain Humidity Levels At Around 45% – Invest in Dehumidifiers
To prevent mould growth, it’s important to keep humidity levels at around 45% in your home. Using dehumidifiers can help manage moisture—these portable and easily replaceable devices are an effective solution for preventing mould during the colder months.
Keep Your Home Ventilated
It may sound counterproductive, but ventilating your home throughout the winter actually decreases the formation of mould spores within your space.
Cracking open a window, especially in areas of high humidity such as bathrooms and kitchens, allows the moisture to escape, minimising moisture and mould in your home – doing this twice a day is advised.
Move Furniture Away From Exterior Walls
Moisture can get trapped behind your furniture, and without proper ventilation and airflow, the moisture can create mould and mildew on your furniture.
Simply moving your furniture an inch away from the wall can create enough airflow to minimise the formation of mould within your home.
Consider Mould-Prevention Paint
Mould-preventing paint is an amazing option for tackling recurring mould within your home. Mould-preventing paint has chemicals called biocides embedded within the formula that are proven to stop mould from forming on your walls.
Shaving Foam Hack
An amazing hack for minimising condensation build-up within your home this winter is applying a layer of shaving foam to the interiors of your windows. Simply apply a thin layer of shaving foam on your windows, buff the product into your window, and wipe clean with a clean and dry cloth. The shaving foam will create a semi-permanent barrier on your windows preventing water droplets from forming and minimising condensation. Repeat the process every few days to remain condensation-free this winter!
I hope you enjoyed that.

This are some very important tips, and we all need to take them into account for this winter. I will say I haven’t heard of the shaving cream hack before, and I am headed to the store to buy some and try this on my windows.

My husband is diligent about a humidifier during the winter and it fogs up all our windows! Yep it causes black mold. It’s very hard to get rid of.

We had to run a dehumidifier all winter long in our first house. It was old, and condensation was a real problem throughout the house.
