Self-Care Tips For The Extra Busy People. Hello everyone, I hope you are well. In today’s post, I will be exploring a few self-care tips for extra-busy people. In late 2023, I started a new role as a Lounge Agent at the International Airport. It has been a fun yet challenging couple of months, as it requires changing my routine and lifestyle. However, if you know me, you’d know I love challenges, and I love my new job so far and received all the support I need. Finding time for self-care can be challenging, though, especially when juggling work, family, and social commitments. There can be little time left to catch your breath, let alone take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. If you are a busy bee like me and struggle to make time for self-care, try these tips to incorporate good habits into your routine.

Establish A Morning Routine

Starting the day with healthy habits can make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day. For example, you could begin with a nutritious breakfast, such as oatmeal with fresh berries or a green smoothie with spinach and avocado. These options give your body the nutrients and energy it needs to function optimally. In addition to a healthy breakfast, you might also want to incorporate some form of physical activity into your morning routine, such as a brisk walk or a yoga session. This can help to wake up your body and mind, improve your mood, and reduce stress.

Alternatively, you might prefer to start your day with a few minutes of meditation or mindfulness practice, which can help to centre your thoughts and calm your mind. This can be especially helpful if you have a busy or stressful day ahead. Whatever you choose, the key is to find what works for you and make it a consistent part of your daily routine. Over time, these healthy habits will become second nature, making prioritising your well-being and caring for yourself every day easier.

Schedule Time Off

Let me give you an example. Recently, my friend Sarah, who frequently travels for work with British Airways, felt overwhelmed with work and personal commitments. She was constantly moving, and it seemed she couldn’t catch a break. After talking with her, I suggested she take a break from her usual routine and plan a weekend getaway. She was hesitant at first, but she eventually agreed to it. She decided to go on a road trip to a nearby beach town. During her time there, she did some relaxing activities like lying on the beach, reading a book, and exploring the town. She returned feeling refreshed, energised, and ready to tackle her responsibilities with renewed vigour.

Taking time off doesn’t always have to be a grand adventure, but it’s important to prioritise rest. Whether it’s a quiet afternoon at home, a day trip to a nearby park, or a more extended vacation, taking a break from the usual routine can help you recharge your batteries, reduce stress, and increase your productivity and creativity.

Get Enough Sleep

Let’s say you have a project deadline and feel pressured to work long hours to finish everything on time. It can be tempting to sacrifice sleep to spend more time working. However, this can backfire and lead to decreased productivity and quality of work. For example, if you’re sleep-deprived, you may find it difficult to concentrate or make decisions, slowing your work progress. You may also experience more stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact your ability to work efficiently.

On the other hand, if you prioritise sleep and get enough rest, you’ll likely find that you’re more focused, alert, and creative when working on your project. You’ll be able to think more clearly and make better decisions, ultimately leading to higher-quality work and better outcomes. So, while it can be tempting to prioritise work over sleep, it’s important to remember that getting enough rest is critical for your physical and mental health and your productivity and success in all areas of life.

Set Realistic Goals

Let’s say you want to start exercising regularly to improve your physical and mental health. If you set a goal to work out every day for an hour, even though you have a busy schedule and other responsibilities, you may feel overwhelmed and unable to stick to your plan. This can lead to feelings of failure and disappointment, which will ultimately hurt your mental health. Instead, setting a realistic goal that suits your schedule and lifestyle is better. For example, committing to three 30-minute weekly workouts may be more feasible. Then, you can gradually increase the frequency and duration of your workouts as you become more comfortable with your routine.

This way, you’re challenging yourself and setting yourself up for success. Similarly, when it comes to self-care, adding a 10-minute meditation session to your daily routine is more realistic than committing to an hour-long yoga class every day. This way, you incorporate self-care into your schedule without adding unnecessary pressure. Remember, setting realistic goals is critical to managing your mental health. Don’t feel like you must do everything all at once. Start small and work your way up as you become comfortable.

Self-care is essential for everyone, especially those with a busy and demanding lifestyle. Starting a new job in the airport is a new, life-changing adventure. Therefore, it is essential that I implement self-care in my routine to be able to function. Adapting to a new role, working on an early morning shift – as early as 4 am is no joke, and dealing with motherhood and business have been overwhelming. However, I have prioritised my well-being and the stress of a new job by incorporating healthy habits into my daily routine, taking time off, getting enough sleep, and setting realistic goals. It is crucial to remember that taking care of yourself should always be a top priority. By following these tips, you can improve your physical, mental, and emotional health, reduce stress, and increase your productivity and creativity in all areas of life.
