Stop Focusing On What You Have Not Done, And Focus On What You Have Not Done, Yet!

Stop Focusing On What You Have Not Done, And Focus On What You Have Not Done, Yet! Hello everyone, I hope you are well. In today’s post, I will be exploring how shifting your mindset can help you stop looking back and start looking forward to everything you haven’t done. We’ve all had moments where we dwell on missed opportunities or things we should have done by now. But what if we turned our attention to what’s still possible instead of focusing on what hasn’t happened?

Stop Focusing On What You Have Not Done, And Focus On What You Have Not Done, Yet!

We become absorbed by our uncompleted tasks and the unmet expectations we must fulfill. We observe our deficiencies while measuring against our standards as well as the expectations of others. This approach leads to adverse outcomes. This thinking can drain happiness from our life experiences and damage our immediate and future mental state. Instead of dwelling on unachieved goals, we should focus on our capabilities and future possibilities.

Not attending university became a burden that I carried for many years. I began with grand ambitions and optimistic expectations, until life intervened through changing circumstances and expanding responsibilities that made the timing unfavourable. For many years, I treated this lack of completion as my failure. Throughout my life, I used to measure my progress against other graduates who started their careers while I continued to learn.

I learned a transformative lesson that not finishing my education at that time did not prevent me from ever doing so. I transformed my perspective by moving my attention from past missed opportunities to upcoming possibilities. My new perspective on thinking empowered me to seek new possibilities while learning differently and keeping my dreams alive according to my schedule.

From Fixed to Growth Mindset

Moving past what we haven’t done becomes possible by adopting a growth mindset instead of a fixed one. A person with a fixed mindset maintains that their natural abilities and talents remain constant and unalterable. People with a growth mindset believe their capabilities and talents can grow through continuous effort and commitment. A person with a growth mindset will focus on their capabilities and future achievements. Challenges become learning opportunities instead of impossible barriers when we adopt this mindset.

The decision to skip university led me to believe I had eliminated my educational prospects. The circumstances of life intervened—my health condition combined with being a single-parent, responsibilities, financial difficulties and other duties made up my life. Not doing it back then never implied I would never have the chance to do it. I abandoned my question of “Why didn’t I?” and began asking “What can I still do?” That shift changed everything. The completion of my third year at university brings me great pride. The path required tremendous effort and personal and difficult sacrifices throughout the process. My growth mindset allows me to continue my path ahead by dealing with each day individually.

Set Meaningful Goals

Establishing personal objectives enables us to rise above our uncompleted tasks. The goal-setting process provides us with a direction and a purpose in life. Setting targets enables us to concentrate on our desired outcomes while establishing steps to reach those objectives. A defined goal helps us focus on necessary actions instead of being sidetracked by past accomplishments or failures.

My ability to continue forward was substantially supported by creating specific objectives which adapted to my needs. University education seemed too complicated when I first thought about it. The process became more achievable when I divided it into smaller steps, including research for courses, funding applications, and child care arrangements.

Every step I took helped me gain confidence and build momentum. Despite short classes and a lengthy commute, I continuously considered my educational objectives. Two buses carrying me for more than an hour each way resulted in a one-hour class attendance. The cold months brought additional hardship to my daily routine. But I kept going. The purpose behind my initial start remained clear, so that became my sufficient motivation.

Finding My Way at University

My third year marked my first ever attendance at a university building, although it was my third year. The moment was filled with excitement, nervousness and a slight doubt that I was actually there. I looked at the other students and thought they must be more intelligent or better prepared than I was.

Time passed, and I discovered a beautiful truth that we were all at the university to learn. There were no favourites, no special treatment. All students received fair treatment from the lecturers, and every student maintained their purpose for being there. It was both a feeling of respect and a feeling of strength.

University life presented many challenges to me in terms of its practical aspects. I needed to give myself daily encouragement. My goal was to form new friendships, although they did not materialise. The focus in final year classes remained on completion, and students followed different schedules. Since our paths crossed twice, I met materialism only when they were part of my project group. My satisfaction emerged from my academic work. My favourite subjects were Management Consultancy, Public Relations and Specialism, and Appraisal of Current Market Research. The modules delivered practical project-based learning, perfectly matching my preferred learning style. I knew at that moment that I was precisely in the right place.

Practice Self-Compassion

We can build a growth mindset by practising self-compassion in addition to goal-setting. Self-compassion involves showing gentle kindness and acceptance when facing challenges or difficulties. Self-compassion helps us avoid severe self-criticism when we make errors or fall short. Through this approach, we gain better empathy for ourselves, which helps us adopt a growth mindset to focus on our capabilities and unfulfilled potential.

My academic journey has become an emotional experience as well as an educational one. There were days I felt broken, tired or simply not enough. Self-compassion has become crucial to me because I have experienced depression alongside trauma and loneliness.

I have often directed my anger toward myself for beginning later or managing my challenges worse. Beating myself up never helped. Learning to show myself kindness turned out to be the key to success. I acknowledge that I give my best based on what life has given me.

Self-compassion motivated me to continue my journey when I considered stopping. The process includes setbacks I should accept because I deserve patience and grace, like anyone else.

Embrace Gratitude

You should also develop a practice of gratitude. Gratitude is an ongoing practice of being thankful for the good things in our lives, the blessings and opportunities, even when things are tough or challenging. Practising gratitude leads people to notice the positive elements in their lives above the negative aspects. When we practice gratitude, we value our achievements and progress more than our unachieved objectives.

Gratitude has become my source of power during times when I experienced health issues and sleepless nights, and moments of self-doubt. I developed a daily practice to recognise achievements, including finishing a module, getting positive feedback and recognising difficult weeks. The practical recognition moved my attention from what lacked to what truly mattered. The weight of life did not diminish the fact that there was ongoing development and significance as well as loveliness in my experience.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

This entire experience, including its complex parts, has led me to become who I am today, so I am thankful for it. The achievement of this dream became possible because of people who supported my journey when I doubted myself. My friends encouraged me, while my lecturers provided support through the online communities where I discovered meaningful stories and motivational content.

The times I felt utterly cut off from the world and unseen by others happened frequently. The positive influences around me helped me realise I was standing alone. Their backing allowed me to quiet down my fear and pursue the possibilities.

I maintain that everyone realises their social environment with great purpose. The right people will never permit you to abandon your own potential.

That Being Said

Your Story Is Still Being Written.

These practices help us redirect our attention from our limitations to our past achievements and present capabilities. Our goals and life satisfaction will increase through the development of purpose, direction and self-confidence. We should focus on our upcoming opportunities instead of dwelling on our past accomplishments.

And Remember This…

If destiny wanted to shatter you, it would have done so already.

Your presence in the world confirms that obstacles were not meant to stop you.

You would not continue your forward progress if the obstacles in your path were meant to stop you.

Your internal voice continues to speak because the world has not succeeded in silencing you.

You survived. You rose.

Your achievements are forever inscribed in your history, which no power can erase.

I hope you enjoyed that. My tale exists to motivate you to keep moving forward regardless of your current position on your life’s journey.

This is a very timely read for me. Last week, I was right about ready to give up on living. I had no success in finding a job, I was hungry, bills unpaid, and just enough money to last me a day. But then I started to tap into my network of friends. Asked for recommendations. Guess what? Now I have two job offers! It is true that we should never dwell on what we have not done. As long as we are blessed with a new day, that is a sign that we are given another shot to make things right.
