What If I Didn’t Win?

What If I Didn’t Win? Hello everyone, I hope you are well. I’ve been thinking about this post for weeks. At first, I thought it would simply be a graduation post. I’d share a few photos, say thank you for all your lovely messages, and celebrate graduating with a BA (Hons) in Business with a Marketing focus. But every time I sat down to write, something didn’t feel right. Because the truth is, this isn’t really a story about graduation. It’s about a journey that began more than twelve years ago. A journey filled with heartbreak, uncertainty, resilience and hope. A journey that slowly shaped me into the woman I am today.

If you’ve been part of the Life With Sonia community for a while, you’ve walked so much of that journey with me. You’ve celebrated my highs, supported me through my lows and reminded me, time and time again, that none of us has to face life’s challenges alone. For that, I will always be grateful. When I look back now, I don’t just see a degree. I see every setback that taught me something, every obstacle that made me stronger, and every small decision that slowly changed the direction of my life.

This isn’t the story of how I graduated.

It’s the story of how I chose myself.

So, before we celebrate where I am today, let me take you back to where it all began.

What If I Didn’t Win?

A Life I Never Imagined

In 2014, my life changed forever.

I became a mum, and although it was one of the happiest moments of my life, it was also one of the most difficult. During my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with HIV, and not long after, I found myself facing life as a single parent.

To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement.

My future suddenly felt uncertain. I wasn’t thinking about university, a career or building a business. My only concern was making sure my daughter and I would be okay.

Like many young mums, I was trying to navigate a life I hadn’t planned. There were days filled with fear, self-doubt and unanswered questions. I didn’t know what the future would hold, but I knew one thing for certain.

I had a little girl who was depending on me.

Looking back now, I realise I spent those early years in survival mode. I was taking one day at a time, doing the best I could with what I had.

I couldn’t see it then, but those difficult moments were quietly shaping the woman I would become.

At the time, I thought my story was falling apart.

In reality, it was only beginning.

The Day I Chose Myself

Looking back, people often ask me what changed my life.

Some think it was going to university. Others believe it was graduating. But the truth is, my life changed long before I ever stepped into a classroom.

It changed the day I decided that I wanted more.

Not just for me.

For my daughter.

Life had already tested me long before I became a single mum. I lost my right arm in a car accident when I was a little girl, and a few years later I became hard of hearing. Those experiences taught me resilience, but they also left me doubting myself at times. Then came single motherhood and an HIV diagnosis. It felt as though every chapter of my life brought another challenge.

One day, I realised I had a choice. I could allow my circumstances to define me, or I could start writing a different story.

So, I chose myself.

I returned to education with no master plan. I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable of more. One course became another, my confidence slowly grew, and before I knew it, I was walking through the doors of university.

Looking back, my greatest achievement wasn’t earning a degree.

It was believing that my past didn’t have to decide my future.

Everything that has happened since then began with that one decision.

More Than My Degree

As proud as I am of graduating from university, this year hasn’t just been about my achievement.

It’s been about ours.

This summer, my daughter, Sasha-Ann, graduated from primary school and is getting ready to start secondary school. Watching her reach this milestone filled me with a kind of pride that’s difficult to put into words. It feels like only yesterday I was holding her in my arms, wondering what our future would look like. Now she’s growing into a confident, kind and determined young lady, and I couldn’t be prouder.

One day, she looked at me and said something I’ll never forget.

“Mum, you’re my role model.”

Those words meant more to me than any degree ever could.

I never wanted to be a perfect mum because perfection doesn’t exist. I wanted to show her that no matter where life begins, you can always choose a different path.

When I look at her today, I don’t just see my daughter.

I see the reason I never gave up.

If my journey has taught her to believe in herself, work hard and never stop dreaming, then every challenge I faced has been worth it.

She will always be my greatest achievement.

The Next Chapter

Graduating from university is a moment I’ll always treasure, but I don’t see it as the end of my journey.

I see it as the beginning of a new one.

Later this year, I’ll be returning to university to begin my Master’s degree. A few years ago, I never imagined I’d even complete one qualification, let alone choose to continue studying. It still feels surreal, but it’s a reminder of how much can change when you believe in yourself.

Before that adventure begins, I’m looking forward to spending the summer doing what I love most: creating. I’ll be working on new projects for Life With Sonia, growing my businesses, and bringing to life ideas that have been sitting in my notebook for far too long.

I’ve learnt that dreams don’t become reality by waiting for the perfect time.

They grow when you take the first step.

If there’s one thing I hope my story shows, it’s that your past doesn’t have to define your future. Sometimes the smallest decision can change the direction of your life.

For me, that decision was choosing myself.

And I believe the best chapters are still waiting to be written.

Thank You

I Didn’t Get Here Alone

Before I finish, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.

To every reader who has supported Life With Sonia over the years, thank you for reading my stories, sharing your own experiences and reminding me why I started this blog in the first place. Your kindness, encouragement and messages have meant more than you’ll ever know.

To every guest writer who has trusted me with their words, thank you for helping make this blog a place where stories are shared, lessons are learnt, and women feel seen.

To the brands, businesses and organisations that have chosen to work with me, thank you for believing in my platform and supporting my work.

To my lecturers, classmates, family and friends, thank you for every conversation, every word of encouragement and every act of kindness along the way.

And finally, thank you to my beautiful daughter, Sasha-Ann.

You have been my greatest motivation, my biggest blessing and the reason I kept believing that a better future was possible.

This degree may bear my name, but in my heart, it belongs to us both.

So… What If I Didn’t Win?

Twelve years ago, I couldn’t have imagined writing these words.

Back then, I was trying to survive.

Today, I’m a proud single mum, a university graduate, an entrepreneur, and soon, a Master’s student.

More importantly, I’m a woman who finally believed she was worthy of the life she dreamed about.

Looking back, I don’t think I won because I graduated.

I won the day I chose to stop letting my past decide my future.

So when people ask me,

“What if I didn’t win?”

I smile.

Because I guess we’ll never know.

With love,

Sonia

I loved this sensitive, honest and inspirational post. You are so right–our pasts do not have to determine our futures. Winning is not the only thing. Thank you for posting this today.

    • Life With Sonia

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that our past may shape us, but it doesn’t have to define our future. I’m so pleased that message resonated with you. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and leave such a thoughtful comment.

Sonia, every time I visit your writings, I take away a piece of wisdom. Today, my gosh, you’ve blown me away by sharing a little more of your story. That wisdom that shows up within the lines of your writings has been hard-earned through your courage and resilience. I admire and respect that so much. You are an inspiration not just to your daughter, but to me and many others.

If you feel moved to do so, I would be honoured to share your story on my storytelling platform. I can only imagine how many more people you would inspire.

Thank you so much. Reading this brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes it’s scary to be so open about the difficult parts of life, but I’ve always believed that our stories have the power to encourage someone else who may be walking a similar path. I’m truly honoured by your invitation, and I would love the opportunity to share my story with your community. Thank you again for your kindness and encouragement—it means the world to me.

Regretting about the past, not taking the right steps at the right time is what sets you up for failing. No one knows what future holds, what’s important is that you never stop trying! Your story is truly inspiring.

    • Life With Sonia

We can’t rewrite the past, but we can choose what we do from this moment onwards. That was one of the biggest lessons I learnt on this journey. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for your encouragement. It truly means a lot.

A powerful reminder that setbacks don’t define us. Your reflection reframes “not winning” as growth, resilience, and courage to keep moving forward with purpose.

    • Life With Sonia

That’s exactly the message I hoped readers would take away from this post. Life doesn’t always go to plan, but our setbacks don’t have to define who we become. Thank you so much for your kind comment.

  • Beth

I think your story highlights something so important. Thinking about the what-ifs will keep you from doing anything. It’s not what if I don’t win? What if I never try?

    • Life With Sonia

Beth, I love that perspective. You’re absolutely right, sometimes the biggest risk isn’t failing, it’s never giving ourselves the chance to try. I’m so glad my story resonated with you. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful comment.
