Why Setting Goals Matters More Than Ever. Hello everyone, I hope you’re doing well. In today’s post, we’re going to talk about something that has been on many of our hearts lately — how to shift our mindset and refocus as we move forward in life after the pandemic.
We all know that Covid-19 isn’t going away completely, but we’re learning how to live around it. And while the world continues to adjust, so must we. That’s why now is the perfect time to revisit our goals, reflect on our values, and get intentional about how we want to live going forward.
Why Setting Goals Matters More Than Ever
Goals aren’t just a productivity hack or a January trend — they’re anchors for our purpose. Having goals gives you something to hold onto when life feels uncertain. They help you see beyond survival and into possibility.
What Are Your Goals?
I recently had a heart-to-heart with a dear friend. She had finished my private coaching program a few years ago, and since then, she’d been trying to grow her business on her own. But the truth was, she felt stuck. Her business wasn’t moving forward, and neither was her personal life. At one point in our chat, she let out a heavy sigh and said, “I don’t know what to do.”
So I gently asked, “What are your goals?”
She blinked. “Goals?” It was like I’d spoken a foreign language.
But when I asked her what she wanted for her career and her life in a few years, her energy shifted. She lit up. She talked about starting her own business and how much she wanted to feel proud of what she built. We broke it down into steps, and suddenly, her whole outlook changed. She saw a path forward. That’s the power of goals.
Let’s talk about why setting goals is so important:
Goals Give Direction to Life
Sure, spontaneity has its charm. But when we’re talking about long-term fulfillment, we need more than winging it. Humans are wired to seek meaning and structure. Goals give us that foundation. They guide our choices and help us stay aligned with what matters most. Without them, we can end up floating through life without ever feeling grounded.
Example:
One of my former clients was feeling aimless after taking time off work during the pandemic. When she finally sat down and outlined a few clear personal and professional goals, she found herself more energized and focused. Having direction brought back her sense of purpose.
Goals Help Us Choose Our Own Path
If we don’t decide where we’re going, someone else will do it for us — whether it’s a boss, society, or outside pressure. We might take a job because someone else said it was secure, or follow trends because they look good online. But deep down, we feel disconnected. Setting your own goals helps you claim your direction and say, “This is what I want.” That’s when life begins to feel truly yours.
Example:
A woman in our community pursued a career in finance because it seemed like the “smart” choice. But she always dreamed of working in wellness. Setting a goal to transition into coaching helped her finally take control of her path and feel aligned again.
Goals Motivate Us
On the hard days, when life feels heavy or overwhelming, goals remind us why we’re doing the work. They carry us through exhaustion and setbacks because they give us a bigger picture. Like going back to school while working full-time — it’s tough in the moment, but when you’re fueled by purpose, you keep going.
Example:
As a single mum, I decided to go back to school. Her goal was to build a better life for my daughter. Even when it got tough, that goal kept me motivated through every late-night study session and early morning shift.
Goals Keep Us Focused on What Matters
When we don’t have clarity, it’s easy to get swept up in other people’s expectations or lose track of our own desires. Goals act as a compass. They remind us what we truly value and help us say yes to the right things — and no to the distractions.
Example:
One entrepreneur I know used to say yes to every opportunity. Once she set clear goals for her business, she learned to say no to what didn’t align. Her energy and results improved because she was no longer scattered.
Goals Save Time
Ever feel like your to-do list is never-ending? Goals help you filter. You can ask yourself, “Does this get me closer to what I really want?” If the answer is no, it might not be worth your time or energy. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing what matters most.
Example:
I once helped a client who constantly felt overwhelmed. Once she aligned her to-do list with her goals, she started cutting out tasks that didn’t serve her. That simple shift helped her reclaim hours in her week.
Goals Reduce Stress
With clear goals, decision-making becomes easier. Should you take that new job offer? Should you move to a new city? Your goals help you answer those questions with confidence, because you’ve already defined what success looks like for you.
Example:
A friend of mine had an opportunity to relocate for work. At first, she was torn. But once she revisited her life goals, the decision became clear. Knowing her long-term vision helped her choose with confidence — and without the panic.
Goals Give a Sense of Accomplishment
There’s something incredibly empowering about checking off a goal. Whether it’s a small step or a major milestone, every accomplishment builds momentum. It boosts your confidence, renews your energy, and reminds you that you’re capable of more than you think.
Example:
One of my clients set a small goal to walk 30 minutes a day for a month. When she completed it, she felt so proud — and it gave her the momentum to tackle bigger wellness goals. Progress, no matter how small, creates motivation.
That Said
Life after the pandemic is calling us to be more intentional, more grounded, and more connected to what truly matters. Goals aren’t about pressure or perfection — they’re about alignment. They remind us of who we are, what we care about, and where we want to grow. Whether you’re starting fresh or just re-focusing, give yourself permission to dream again. Let your goals guide you — gently, lovingly, and with purpose. You’ve got everything you need to begin.
So, my love, if you haven’t taken time lately to reflect on your goals, consider this your gentle nudge. Grab a notebook. Sit with yourself. Ask, “What do I truly want right now?” And then, make a plan.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need the courage to start.
Journaling Prompt: What is one goal that feels aligned with the life I want to create? What’s one small step I can take today to move toward it?
I hope you enjoyed that.

Yes, we should set our goals, and the clarity of reason is so important. Once we clear about our why, and then we can figure out how.

Yes, we should set our goals, and the clarity of reason is so important. Once we clear about our “why”, we can figure out the “how”. The reasons for the goals of different people are not the same. You can distinguish your real “why” when you hear your heart sing to that “why”.

So many great points! Without goals we become lost and that eats away at us.

Goals are important in the sense that they give us direction in life. It is better to have a simple, or not so important goal, than having no goals at all. Working towards meeting and surprising goals help us achieve way more than we ever thought possible.

What an interesting and accurate perspective that goals help reduce stress because decisions are made easier.

I don’t know where I would be without goals. Probably dawdling and avoiding all the things I need to do in favor of the things I want to do. This is a great post and very motivating.
